The DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance has been deeply engaged in the vision, creation, and on-going administration of Brooklyn Bridge Park.
We have been the vital and sole voice for DUMBO residents for this park, and have worked collaboratively with neighboring communities in its creation, protections, and public uses over four decades.
FROM COMMUNITY PLAN TO CONDO PLAN
In fact, when real estate developer interests began to erode public uses after the 2001 Master Plan was approved, the DNA was at the forefront of advocacy to limit privatization. While not successful in preventing private housing from taking away precious parklands (the 2004 “Condo Park” plan that totally eclipsed the 2001 Community Plan), particularly at the John Street location, we have been successful in protecting historic structures in the park, securing additional lands for park-use, developing ideas for each section’s features, and in the on-going management of frictional issues that impact the quality of life for our local residents and businesses.
Because the park occupies the longest boundary for our community, the Dumbo Neighborhood Association will continue to play a vital role in the management of this park. Our dedication to community engagement with the public authority that runs this park continues even after the last part of the park has been designed (the area under the Great Bridge). We helped rename this area as Emily Roebling Square in the early 2020s
DNA initiated and led negotiations with Borough President Howard Golden to add Con Ed’s brown-field at John Street into the footprint of the park (2000) as recompense for decades of fires and dumping at that site. Sadly our hard-fought parklands were later given away by State Senator Squadron to condo development and the dark campaign contributions he took from housing interests (2013)
DNA advocated for public park uses and recreational features removed when private housing came into this park, joining the BBP Defense Fund in its many lawsuits to limit privatization of public lands (2005-2018)
DNA protected the Tobacco Warehouse from a wrecking ball (1997) and participated in a legal settlement when the park administrators were found guilty of illegally alienating parklands, securing two acres of new parkland at the DUMBO entrance under the Manhattan Bridge. (2012)
DNA worked in collaboration with Rick Simone at the Department of Health on a pilot program and successfully reduced the rat population in and around the perimeters of our community. This program was later adopted throughout the city based on our work. (2013 - present).
DNA joined together with four other associations to secure and fund the first-ever community-based planning process since the condo-park design went forward, for the design of the area under the Brooklyn Bridge (2017-18). Advocated for our community’s nearly universal recommendations for this important historic space.
The Dumbo Neighborhood association is a founding member of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Community Advisory Council to advise the park of community needs, issues, and concerns, and to initiate ideas for transportation infrastructure and design that positively impact the park experience for all users (2010 to present). *
We continue to advocate for public uses of Brooklyn Bridge Park on behalf of our community, and for transparency with the authority that runs this land, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, on behalf of area residents and businesses.
*(Note: Brooklyn Bridge Park is not managed by the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation but is a city “authority” independent of the Parks Department, and the land is not protected as a public park, unlike all other city parks under the Public Trust Doctrine
DNA led then-Brooklyn Waterfront Alliance engagement in developing principles to guide public uses for a park along the waterfront (1984-86) and partnered with other neighboring communities helping form the Brooklyn Bridge Park Coalition that used our model for the 13 Guiding Principles in the creation of a waterfront park (1999).
