DUMBO Neighborhood Alliance worked hard with the Landmarks Preservation Commission and Landmarks Preservation Foundation to have DUMBO designated as a historical district. The marker to celebrate the important manufacturing district's history is on Jay Street near the corner of Water Street.

"The neighborhood’s historic streets, made of the granite Belgian blocks commonly referred to as “cobblestones,” are crumbling and disappearing. In some places, sections of the street seem to have caved in. In others, they bulge and gape with unseemly rips and tears."
